Just for Me

My birthday was April 26th. A big one. And I don’t ask for much from the Baby Mama but I desperately needed that weekend for myself. To myself. So I did ask to have that and for the kids to stay with her. It’s also been many…many years since I had a vehicle that was just for me. Without goldfishies smashed in the mats. Without puffy paint smeared around from transporting “art”. And without Target or doctor’s office stickers stuck all over the headliner. So, I promised myself that if the truck I had my eye on was still there when I got back, I was going to buy it. For me. Sort of for making it this far! Even if my daughter said, “any color but white”.

My dad is a Ford man so he was less than pleased with me. But I think he’s never quite let go of being the Gatekeeper of curating family cars. And I reminded him how proud he’d been to hand me my Honda (which clearly was not a Ford) way back when. To do that for me. And that it’s still just that. A matter of pride. But what I choose to do for me and my own family…and I’m dreadfully happy about this, in particular.

I don’t plan on driving it tons, but having it did give me the opportunity to get my Jeep fixed up and it’s finally in the shop today…all day. The A/C has been out, wiper blade gone, back one burnt out from my bike rack, needs an oil change, clicks/clacks, muddy tire wobble, and a headlight out. They can have it. Me and the newbie are getting acquainted.

The truck has been a blessing in many ways. With the help of a buddy, the biggest and, in no uncertain terms, life changing aspect has been the readout screen. A huge one at that. I can bluetooth my transcriber right through it and read what I can’t hear. And see subtitles that aren’t fine print on shows and movies if I have my little converter thing with me. The system takes down my words as well with fair accuracy. It doesn’t record or sound anywhere near ideal, but to me, it’s been heaven. And it’s helped me feel a lot less separated and isolated. A little more able. So. I’m happy. And occasionally youtubing gaming walkthroughs that *aren’t* Minecraft or Pokemon World. And this is a No Pony Zone. Neigh.

  6. Awesome. When we – or I should say he (I already had) retired – he bought a truck not dis-similar to yours. I was not happy. It’s BIG! it took me a long time to steel myself to get in behind the wheel and drive the thing. I felt like a learner driver all over again. I call her Big Red, for obvious reasons. She’s a good girl and we get on great now. I think she has forced me into being a more mindful and careful driver πŸ™‚ Ours is a Ford Ranger. Himself is a diehard Ford man. Enjoy your new friend πŸ™‚

    1. Yes! My one misgiving is the incredibly….wiiiide…turns. Im used to whipping into parking spots at school. Now I’m out in the back 40 just so I don’t take two cars out when I park!

      1. Tell me about it! I am not friends with car parks. I had one dingle in a Target car park that has left an indelible imprint – I now look for parks that have plenty of space around me. Usually means I have to walk further, but that’s good exercise anyway. I’ve had a really crook knee the last couple of months so have had to take to using a portable step so I can climb in without wrecking my knee! I have it hooked to a dog leash so when on my own I can pull it in. Hubby calls it my dog, lol! Not the most dignified look, but who cares. It works πŸ™‚

        1. Wait, you have a tiny staircase that you pull on a leash? That has to be the most amazing thing I’ve heard in ages! I need that cause I’ve got a fucked knee too!! πŸ˜‚

          1. Truth be told it is an IKEA step. It has two finger holes either side, so I just tied the dog leash through that. I tuck the loose end into the back of the seat so I can then pull it up once I’m in the car! Innovation at it’s best πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ Best thing since sliced bread !!! No knee pressure…

    1. The dealership has had other my car since last Friday and I can’t get it till tomorrow so I’ve been swapping between the rental and the truck. I waay underestimated it’s size and lack of tight turn capacity! 😭😭😭
